The Functioning of Radiators with Coolant
The usage of a car results in the production of a lot of heat. A radiator is a component of the car that handles all the heat dissipation duties, to keep the engine cool enough to continue functioning, and the rest of the vehicle comfortable enough for people to sit in. A radiator is tasked with the main responsibility of keeping the car cool. The absence of a radiator would have rendered an engine impossible to use.
The radiator does not manage the risk of heat dissipation on its own. There is normally a liquid circulating between the radiator and engine that collects the heat from the engine called a coolant. For optimum functioning of the radiator, the coolant needs to be regularly replaced. The same coolant also keeps the engine from freezing up during cold seasons, thereby earning it the name of anti-freeze.
The coolant and radiator normally operate the same way across all engines. Aluminum is the choice material when it comes to constricting radiators due to its heat dissipating properties. IT is a lightweight material. The radiator works when it sends the coolant into the inner parts of the engine, where it collects the heat generated. This coolant then is directed back into the radiator where it is cooled down, thereby losing the heat. It is then fed back into the engine, and the cycle continues. This cycle remains constant as you drive.
In the past, there was no coolant. Water used to be what was driven into the engine. With the rise in our technological prowess, engines became too powerful for water to have a reasonable impact in cooling. It would boil within the engine, thereby damaging it. The invention of coolant came at an opportune time. It can withstand significantly higher temperatures, which makes it more effective and an economical option.
Leaks are what normally cause radiators not to function properly. When coolant leaks, the performance suffers as a result. This cases the engine to overheat as sludge forms within the radiator. This can cause more damage to other parts of the vehicle. When coolant tubing gets damaged, you will see such problems cropping up. The best way to stop this from happening is to have the parts inspected.
The next problem that afflicts radiators is damage to the fan belts. The radiator relies on its fan belt to circulate the coolant into the engine block, and when it stops working, the radiator loses its functionality. Such irregularities need to be arrested the moment they are noted. It has been noted that shoddy work when the coolant tubing was being fixed resulted in it leaking. Such an issue can be fixed when the proper attachment of the clamps is done. In case the radiator continues to show the same problems, you may need to take your car for a radiator replacement.
